Highlanders, the dynamic soccer team won the lucrative Chibuku Trophy. They beat Mangula at Rufaro Stadium with talented players such as Ananias Dube, Billy Sibanda, Kenny Ngulube, and Bruce Grobelaar.

 
Mhuri yavaMukadota began as a family radio drama series. Safirio Madzikatire stared alongside Susan Chenjerai. Lever Brothers later sponsored the longest running Zimbabwean drama, Mukadota’s family, after independence.
 

The country, then Rhodesia adopted a new constitution and became a republic.

 

The United Nations Security Council unanimously approved a resolution urging an end to Rhodesian defiance of previous United Nations calls for granting racial equality to its black African citizens.

 

Veteran Nationalist leader, Leopold Takawira, affectionately known as known as the Lion of Chilimanzi died in detention.

 

The Victoria Falls airport was attacked and damaged by African Nationalist forces.

 

ZAPU distanced itself from the Front for the Liberation of Zimbabwe, FROLIZI, an exiled political liberation movement which had been formed earlier following the banning of ZANU.

 

Amon Shonge, a strong ZANU supporter, and farm manager of Cold Comfort Farm established a communication base to gather and disseminate intelligence to party leaders. This was often a safe haven for nationalist leaders in route to other areas of the country.

 

Nationalist African armed forces were unsuccessful in their attempt to blow up the grave of Cecil John Rhodes at Matopos.

 

Famous Zimbabwean guitarist Louis Mhlanga, started his career. He would join groups such as Ilanga and Oliver Mutukudzi. The height of his career was his recording of Musik Ye Afrika with bassist Jimmy Indi and drummer Jethro Shasha.
