The Catholic church has operated in Zimbabwe since the 16th century.
After the martyrdom of Da Silveria in 1561, the next Catholic mission was led by the Dominican Fathers who established themselves south of the Zambezi and remained there until 1775.
Despite some success converting the sons of the Munhumutapa, Catholicism did not thrive at the time.
