| Bulawayo is affectionately referred to as the ‘City of Kings’ due to the Ndebele kings Mzilikazi and Lobengula.
In 1870, Nkosi Lobengula ascended the Ndebele throne after the death of his father and founder of the Ndebele nation, King Mzilikazi. He established his first capital, which he named Bulawayo. Before him the famous a Zulu Emperor, Tshaka was the first to name his own capital Bulawayo. Ironically, both Tshaka and Lobengula have had a ‘first’ and ‘second’ Bulawayo. |
